Brass Instruments: History and Uses
Trumpets
The trumpet has not changed much in appearance in the last 500 years! It is an extended round tube, bent into the characteristic shape.
The sound on a trumpet is made by blowing into a "cup mouthpiece." Various ways of playing in different keys have been tried through the ages, including slides (like the trombone) and keys (which were used in the eighteenth century; keyed trumpets were the instruments for which Haydn composed much of his orchestral music for).
The modern system of using valves was perfected in the 1830s.
Nowadays, trumpets are used in orchestras, marching bands, jazz bands, and klezmer ensembles--wherever their light, penetrating tone or their cutting, blaring sound can be appreciated.
